Anderson, who is both a farmer and a pilot, used a 40-ft. field cultivator to make the huge letters in a harvested oat field on his farm near Paynesville, Minn. Then he took his girlfriend, Shirley Bauer, up for a ride in his single-engined plane, telling her they were going for a ride to look at fall colors. To get her to see the proposal, Anderson had to dip the wing.
The 27-year-old Anderson says he spent about an hour making the 40-ft. letters in the field. When finished, the entire message stretched about a half mile long and a quarter mile wide,and covered more than 65 acres.
Shirley says it took her a few minutes to understand the real reason for the flight. Once she did, she told John yes, then suggested it might be a good idea if they landed because she felt queasy from the excitement.
