Crusher Turns Field Rocks Into Fertilizer
Why pick stones and carry them off the field when you can crush them into powder and leave the fertilizer-enhancing minerals in place? The rear-mount, pto-powered Bugnot rock crusher can dig out and crush stones to a depth of 10 in.
“The Bugnot can pulverize stones as large as a basketball into flour,” says Sam Abourjeily, Bugnot NA.
The 1,000-rpm crushers have to be operated at relatively slow field speeds. However, the deeper they work, the longer between uses.
“Depending on local freeze and thaw, it can be as much as 8 years before you have stones at the surface again,” says Abourjeily. “Annual stone removal wastes valuable time each spring.”
The Bugnot stone crushers come in varying widths from 5 to 10 ft. and require 60 to 500 hp. Stones are pounded against hydraulically adjustable anvils using 6 to 14 hammers, depending on the working width. Hammers are 6/14 hard-faced steel for use against limestone or tungsten carbide hammers for high wear and wood applications. Hammers are mounted to a steel rotor machined from a solid steel bar.
The distance between the hammers and the anvils can be adjusted from the tractor seat. The less distance, the finer the finished material. The anvils are mounted in multiple sections on rams coupled to a nitrogen accumulator shock absorber. It, too, can be controlled from the tractor seat.
“At an 8 in. depth, you create a fluffy material you sink in to your knees,” says Abourjeily. “You can pull into an abandoned field grown up with trees and turn them into mulch with the machine. Then drop it into the ground, and pulverize everything including roots, stumps and stones.”
Abourjeily recalls, after one demonstration, a farmer said, “I should’ve had this 40 years ago.”
“Other customers tell me they quickly have neighbors knocking at the door asking what they had done to increase the value of the farm,” says Abourjeily. “There’s a real opportunity to do custom work for other farmers in the area.”
Bugnot is a French company that makes a wide array of stone crushers, grinders, and forestry mulchers. Bugnot NA markets the machines in both the U.S. and Canada. Abourjeily deals directly with farmers, setting up demonstrations and sales. He does offer commissions to retailers or past customers.
“It’s difficult for specialty brand retailers to focus on a short line like us, and it adds cost,” says Abourjeily. “We prefer to offer the lowest price we can to our customers.”
Abourjeily reports machines vary from $60,000 to $160,000 (USD). “Our 10-ft. machine is our biggest seller,” he says. “It requires a minimum of 270 hp. to go 7 in. deep. However, we have crushers to suit any needs, large or small.”
